After the Fall, Under the Glow

Each of these digital photographs is a long exposure of a television screen streaming nature-documentary footage. The technique distills an underlying essence from these programs, collapsing together numerous frames into singular hybrids of color, motion, texture, and darkness. Scenes of animals vying for survival dissolve into subliminal abstractions; hints of skin, feathers, scales, and fur mingle with digital ghosting, artifacts, and noise.

The resulting images are printed on polycarbonate and backlit in lightboxes resembling flatscreen televisions.  They are meditations on the paradoxical experience—simultaneously enthralling and strangely alienating—of witnessing the wonders and hardships of the natural world from the safe remove of home.
